TSN sent out a survey on sports after school. Out of the 132 MS students who answered as of April 21, 118 played sports outside of school, which is good because sports are beneficial.
Research has proved that playing sports will actually lead to better grades. According to Dailymail, students who play team sports will be more likely to receive better grades and go on to pursue higher levels of education. Dailymail says the reason for better grades is due to the fact that students who play sports have more self motivation, resulting in academic success. This is good news since most SIS middle schoolers play team sports, such as basketball and soccer.
Also according to NBC News, middle schoolers who performed best on fitness tests also performed better academically. A study which studies sixth through eighth graders also concluded that those who exercised and did well on fitness tests also did better on standardized tests.
Not only will sports provide academic benefits, but it will also lead to better mental health. ABC News says that playing sports reduces the risk of children to bully others and also reduces the risk of children being bullied themselves. They also state that sports give people a sense of belonging, which can improve mental health.
One of the most common sports that SIS middle schoolers played was basketball, with the majority of the responses saying that they played basketball outside of school. The second most popular sport was soccer, however, the number of people who played other sports such as soccer weren’t even close to the majority of the middle schoolers who played basketball. Few played tennis, squash, golf, dance/ballet, kendo, and baseball.
Some sports only about one person in middle school wrote were Pilates, ice hockey, weight lifting, and aerobics.
Most SIS middle schoolers played sports two to three times a week, some played once, four times, five times, or six times, but there were a few who played sports everyday.
Nevertheless, exercise should be a part of everyones life, especially for students because physical activity will not only help with improving strength and becoming more fit but will also lead to better performance in school.
